What are ants?

Here in Oklahoma, we have a wide variety of ant species ranging from the small and painful red fire ant to the wood-destroying carpenter ant. Typically, ants are social insects that are usually found living outdoors in underground colonies which are comprised of at least one queen and thousands of workers. These workers ants are responsible for building these underground colonies and providing food for their queen and the rest of their colony. All ants are dangerous to a certain degree, but depending on the exact species, some are more dangerous than others. For example, carpenter ants pose no direct threat to your health but they do pose a significant threat to the wood of your home. What Are Acrobat Ants?

Acrobat ants are a small species of ant that have several unique features that help to identify them. The unique ability to hold their abdomen up over the rest of their body is what has given these ants their name. They display this acrobatic behavior when they or their nest is disturbed. Other ways these ants are identified is by their heart-shaped abdomen or by the foul-smelling odor they emit when threatened. These small ants are usually yellowish-brown to black in color. Some are uniform in color while others are multi-colored.

As they move around your property foraging for food they often make their way inside of homes. These small ants find many ways to gain entrance to homes. Some of the more common entry points are near utility lines or cracks they find the foundation or exterior walls. Once inside your home they begin to create satellite nests to help expand their colony. Acrobat ants prefer to nest behind walls or under floors where there is moisture or fungal growth. What Are Carpenter Ants?

Getting their name from how they build their nests, carpenter ants, are a type of wood-damaging insect. Carpenter ants create nests inside of all sorts of wood, though they prefer water damaged wood. Wood that has been water damaging or is decaying is easier for them to tunnel through and create their nesting galleries within. Unlike termites, carpenter ants do not feed on the wood they are tunneling through.

Carpenter ants are easy to identify because of their large size. Adults range in length from ½ to ⅝ of an inch. Their segmented, oval-shaped body is usually black in color, but may also be red, brown, or a combination of those colors. Workers have large, powerful mandibles that they use to create their nesting sites. These jaws are also used, if needed, as a means of defense.
