What are mosquitoes?

There are thousands of species of mosquitoes that exist across the globe, but here in America, there are only about 150 common species. Both male and female mosquitoes feed on nectar, but only the females also feed on the blood of animals and humans as those blood meals help them to provide nourishment for their eggs.

When mosquitoes feed, they inject their saliva into their victim to prevent their blood from clotting, ensuring them a large meal. This often causes small, red, itchy bumps to appear on the skin where the bite occurred. Typically, mosquitoes move about during the early and late hours of the day to feed on people and plants alike and then rest in the shade during the heat of the day. Needless to say, these biting pests are the last thing you want living and breeding on your property.

Are mosquitoes dangerous?

The mosquitoes here in the United States aren’t as dangerous as those found in other parts of the world, and our advancements in medicine and the availability of quick and reliable treatments for many of the threats mosquitoes pose provide a certain level of protection. However, that doesn’t mean that you should ignore the mosquitoes buzzing around your property. Mosquitoes are actually considered one of the most dangerous animals in the world, if not the most dangerous. These pests have been found to spread several harmful diseases to humans including West Nile virus, malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, and the Zika virus, all of which can result in serious health implications.

Why do I have a mosquito problem?

Here are a few problem areas to look out for as you seek what may be attracting mosquitoes to your property:

  • Drains or gutters that are clogged, broken, or don’t flow properly

  • Items in your yard that hold water such as toys, kiddie pools, sports equipment, tools, and more

  • Pooled water around drains and in low-lying areas of your yard, sidewalk, patio, or driveway

If you have mosquitoes buzzing around your property, chances are there is a stagnant source of water nearby, if not several. These sources of standing water act as the breeding grounds that those mosquitoes need to reproduce and grow their populations on your property!
